The man in Hull

#052 6 images

June made the shop's empty search page show the nearest thing in stock. Every search then returned one garden gnome, and twelve thousand people bought it.

The mistake

The search feature is rewritten so that instead of returning 'no results,' it always returns the single closest-matching item by similarity score, with no minimum relevance threshold. That means every query, no matter how unrelated, resolves to whichever product sits nearest in the ranking — in this case the same garden gnome for washing machines, kettles, sofas, and even a person's name. On top of that, checkout never checks real stock levels against orders, so the shop keeps accepting and confirming purchases for a product it only holds six units of.
