Russ pasted Pip's realistic outage wording into the live customer notice for review. Forty thousand people came to check and knocked the shop over.

The mistake

Russ pastes Pip's draft outage-notice copy straight into the live customer-facing notice field instead of a staging or preview environment, so the text goes to production immediately instead of just being reviewed. Because the copy reads like a real outage ('Major outage. All customers affected.') rather than placeholder Latin, every customer who sees it assumes the shop is actually down and rushes over to check. The resulting surge of simultaneous legitimate traffic overwhelms the service, taking the shop down for real — so a false notice becomes a true one within minutes.
