A sensible saving
Russ made the shop's front page load instantly by showing everyone a saved copy. He saved it mid-upgrade, so every customer got a sign saying the shop was shut.
The mistake
The front page is put behind a full-page cache with no expiry and no purge. The page it stores is the maintenance page served during the upgrade, so every visitor gets that copy long after the upgrade has finished. A cache does not notice when the site changes, so it only refreshes when a TTL runs out or something explicitly purges it, such as a deploy step. Maintenance and error responses should never be cached in the first place.
