The mistake

The storefront computes a product's rating by averaging its reviews and rendering the result, but it never distinguishes "no reviews yet" from "reviewed badly". With an empty review set the average comes back as zero (or null coerced to zero), so every unreviewed product renders a legitimate-looking 0.0 out of 5 instead of hiding the rating widget. Turning the feature on across the catalogue therefore stamps the entire four-hundred-item autumn range with the worst possible score on day one.
