June had the shop hold an item the moment it went into a basket, so nobody would lose a sofa at checkout. It sold out of everything and took forty-one orders.
The mistake
The shop reserves stock the moment an item enters a basket, but nothing ever releases that reservation — there is no TTL on the hold and no sweeper to expire abandoned baskets. Since a basket add costs nothing and happens orders of magnitude more often than a purchase, every browsing session permanently removes inventory. Availability ends up reflecting how many people looked at a product rather than how many bought it.
