Defence in depth
Russ pasted Pip's backup cron, which fires every minute and backs up the backup folder. The volume filled with backups of backups, and never once with the database.
The mistake
Pip writes a "nightly" cron as * * * * * and includes the backup directory in
its own source. Each run copies the previous runs, so the volume fills with
nested copies of everything except the database it was meant to protect.
